CIED's Mission

The Coalition for Innovation, Employment and Development champions the role of innovation and creativity in creating jobs, spurring economic growth and development, and supporting the generation of breakthrough solutions to global challenges.  This internationally diverse body seeks to bring industry, labor, consumer, and non-governmental and other groups together on a range of public policy issues where innovation, creativity, and strong intellectual property rights can deliver real solutions.

The Coalition serves as a leading advocate for, and the protection and enforcement of, strong intellectual property rights globally.  It engages policymakers and legislators in key countries, officials in U.N. bodies and multilateral fora, recognized policymakers and opinion experts, and the international media.  Focusing on these key audiences, the coalition seeks to achieve the following:

  • Raise awareness of and increase support for the value of innovation, creativity, and strong IP rights to economic growth and development through fact-based research and effective communication strategies.
  • Protect IP laws, rules, and norms in key U.N. bodies and other multilateral fora, meetings, and agreements.
  • Strengthen and enforce IP rights in key countries.

A critical component to the Coalition's success is its expansion to include all industries and sectors and recruitment of champions to achieve its goals.  The coalition's strength is in the breadth and depth of its membership, the wide range of interests represented, the leaders who advance its mission, and the merits of its cause — to protect IP and its importance in improving the quality of life for all.
